During the course of the year, there are very few senior cruises available. Many of the cruise lines advertise senior cruises but do not specialize in providing an all-senior marketing model, so seniors find themselves surrounded by a younger crowd onboard. That diversified passenger list of young and old is especially perplexing when seniors find themselves traveling on extended senior cruises with a bunch of young enthusiastic college kids engaging in "partying" day and night.

Most of the "true" senior cruises offer some type of on-board lecturers and offer educational cruises to peak the interest of senior travelers. Senior cruises rarely offer loud "party" atmospheres involving large groups of college kids. Senior travelers prefer to rest, relax and learn topical information while traveling.

Many of the cruise lines offer senior cruises on their older model ships. Senior cruises on older ships means far less passengers and more subtle environment free of the hectic college-aged partying all hours of the night. Likewise, senior cruises on older ships are likely to be cost-effective, because the cruise lines charge less for senior travel on their older ships.

One growing trend with senior cruises is to find a senior adult taking along their adult children as a family reunion styled senior cruise. Middle-aged adult children traveling with their parent are far less likely to act like college kids and enjoy relaxing and learning while traveling with their senior adult parents.
